Client Name - Waterford City
Project Name - Dark to Light
The program for the building was to be a “Gallery of Light” whereby any artworks produced through the medium of light would be housed in the permanent collection
Defining the fundamental elements within the design such as the main entrance, circulation routes, workshops, restaurant, shop and exhibition spaces both permanent and temporary, I strategically placed each on site and looked to use light as an element which connected all.
A prominent feature of the site was a 17th century Viking tower located at the south entrance. I looked to it as source of inspiration in its form creating an external gallery between both the old and the new. The buildings jotted in the landscape “light boxes” became an art collection at the urban scale creating a language amongst the old and the new.
